ENDANGERED SPECIES ACT FACING THREAT IN THE U.S

09/02/2020

The continued assaults brought by the Trump administration on environmental protection, especially the Endangered Species Act, ESA, is raising fears on what might remain of some of U.S favourite ocean animals. the administration is proposing a change in the definition of "habitat" that would enable expose areas of survival and recovery of important endangered species to exploitation by big oil and gas companies and mining firms. According to Ocean Conservancy-a marine environment group, "the move is a reckless proposal that would make it easier for polluting industries to destroy fragile habitats that are able to support endangered species, thereby driving most of the threatened species to the brink of extinction. The 45-year old act, The Endangered Species Act, has saved and protected some species like whales (humpback, Beluga & shark), stellar sea lions, sea otters, 43 species of ocean fish, 22 species of corals, west Indian manatee, sea turtles, and many others. If the proposal passes the public opinion polls and eventually scales through, the ESA might be dismantled and many of these species in the near future could be lost.
